Kalimba       Balafon       Bamboo Flute       Marimba Brett

 For thirty five years Mark Ingram has been a virtuoso of the kalimba family of
traditional african musical instruments. These instruments are the Kalimba,
M'bira,Sanza,Rhumba Box (carribean), and the african-american Marimba Brett.
As soloist and in ensemble he has performed in concert halls, museums and
schools. Mark has studied traditional balafon music with Chris Ibe' of
Nigeria. Mark also studied balafon with Abo Sylla, who performed with Bola
Afrique and Les Merveilles D'Afrique. For seventeen years Mark has handcrafted
and performed on the ancient afro-asian styled bamboo flute.

Mark Ingram has performed with Children Of The Drum, Sanza, Rhythm Exchange,
Ophelia Handberry, and John Marshall. He is the son of Jazz guitarist R.L. Ingram
who performed with Billy Dixon and His Beboppers in the late 1940's. His father
married his mother, Donna Swain and they formed the Donna Ray Quartet. Around 8 years of
age Mark was influenced by drummers like Victor Smith, who played with Donna Ray
and would later go on to play with Gloria Gaynor. Mark Ingram was encouraged by
his parents to study, perform and research the roots of jazz, soul, gospel and
carribean music.

As a member of the percussion ensemble, Children Of The Drum, Mark composed
and performed the soundtrack for the film "Brother to the Wind" a Weston Woods
Studios production of a book published by Lothrop, Lee and Shepard books.The
production recieved the ALA Award, "Notable Recording of a Children's Film."

this website. "Songs From The Afterlife" a 1990 released audio cassette of
exclusively kalimba and m'bira music will be remastered and re-released on CD.
